Read: The Beauty in Breaking

A memoir. A doctor doing what she does. If you have ever spent any time around an emergency room, either as a patient or witness, then you know what kind of place it really is. Not easy. I’ve had many visits, mostly as a patient, but also as a photographer. I once spent days with an ER doc in a county hospital where I was given complete access. Can’t imagine this happening now but it sure gave me both pause and perspective.

Michele Harper’s “The Beauty in Breaking” is a window into both her personal and professional lives. Politics and race in the hospital system, the drama of the days and nights, and how she finds balance on the outside if there is such a thing. The book is in essence about healing. Family, patients, and self. Get it, read it.
