Read: Blowback

Hear me out. I know this might sound odd, but if you are a Trump supporter you should read this book. Of course the book isn’t flattering to Trump, but one thing I’ve found very peculiar about my MAGA friends and family is that they are often completely oblivious to what Trump actually does and says. (And yes, I’m no Trump fan but I have plenty of friends who are, and family members who are, and I’m still friends with them.) When I ask about specific ideas or policies coming out of the Trump camp, I’m often met with “That’s fake.” And no matter how I try to explain that, no, this isn’t a news report, this is what came out of the former president’s mouth, there is zero willingness to engage in conversation. I also find my MAGA friends have extremely limited communication readiness.

Blowback was written by Miles Taylor who was the face behind the book “A Warning,” which he wrote anonymously from inside the Trump White House. Miles Taylor is an American government official who served in the administrations of George W. Bush and Donald Trump. In the administration of the latter, he was an appointee who served in the United States Department of Homeland Security from 2017 to 2019, including as chief of staff of the DHS.

Blowback starts with Taylor in hiding, armed, as he roams around the country trying to avoiding the crazies that Trump unleashed upon the publication of the book. Trusty Sig at his side, Taylor explores the depths of what happens when you attempt to do the right thing in a world seemingly okay with a steady diet of the wrong thing.

The book details how unprepared and uncaring Trump was at the presidential game, and it details his crazy, violent, unhinged plans and policies that his surrounding male succubus were willing to not only play along with, but actively encourage. (Stephen Miller types.) But the real message of this book is that it doesn’t matter what happens with Trump. Win or lose in 2024, the next Trump, or the ideals of this opportunist, are already in waiting. The Republican party, completely and utterly without a morale compass, has adopted the policies and plans to forge ahead.

This was a HUGE mistake on the part of the party, at least in my mind. They had a chance to consolidate power with a younger, centrist candidate during a time of Democratic party hibernation but chose instead to double down on Donny. And now there is no turning back, as evidence by the complete turncoat behavior of Graham, Meadows, McConnell, McCarthy, Jordan, and more. (The arrest of the source assigned to dig up dirt on Biden in Ukraine is the latest example.) Rudderless, soulless clowns who sold out to a guy who has zero respect for any of them. (Trump loathes his supporters more than anyone else because he loathes anyone he can con.)

These books always preach to the choir. If you are already in the Dems camp or you dislike Trump, sure, you might still learn a thing or two, but you already know the plot twists. I do think, however, if Trump is your guy, this is totally worth a read. Trump himself, as we all know, is embroiled in four major trials, eleven of his former appointees have already been indicted and convicted, and at least twenty-four of his former appointees have come forth to say he is unfit for office, so don’t be one of those wimps who tries to write this off as partisanship. It only makes you look scared. Get it, read it, enjoy the details.

  1. On hold at the library. The phrase Taibbi used to describe Goldman Sachs applies to Trump. “great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money”.

  2. Though I am from a totally different continent, still have followed American politics closely for past few decades. I personally don’t have any inclination towards either parties or their representatives. But I guess being neutral have its advantages while gaining information. I will definitely read this book and enjoy the details. Thanks for the recommendation Dan!

What’s happening here is both fascinating and terrifying. All it took was one unhinged lunatic to compromise what turned out to be a very fragile system.

  3. Shifter, I have viewed you as a bit extreme but you have provided me with a degree of entertainment and photography insight. But, today, after reading your comments here, your extremism has turned my stomach! It’s obvious to me that you are short sighted and miss the big picture of the state of society. If you want to help us that love photography, stick with this and leave your politics off of your website–at this point, you are no better than the YouTubers that you condemn.

First, there is nothing more American than calling out the lying scum that comprises our political establishment. If you are one of those who believe the make believe, well, can’t help you and you should’t be here anyway. Two, under no circumstances will you ever dictate what I post or don’t post.
