Creative: Vimeo Test

Hey you jackals. Running a small test here. Does Vimeo work as a hosting platform? That is the question of the day, but I can’t imagine it won’t. Not like Vimeo is new, and not like there aren’t incredible films being hosted there. But alas, someone I know said “Oh, that won’t work.” So, here we are. This is an exciting time for me. Other than almost knocking my teeth out, things are good. I have a lot on my plate. Some assigned and some self-inflicted but it’s all good in the grand scheme of “I could be assistant radical vertical impact simulator,” as opposed to working for Blurb and getting to engage with folks like you.

Just so you know, my goal is not to replace YouTube with Vimeo. My only filmmaking plans are for Blurb, at least for now, but in the future I will supplement my Shifter work with motion content, just not sure how that will look. I just had two days in the field without having to film myself, and I can say with authority how much more enjoyable the experience is, not to mention how much better the still photography is. I credit full time filmmaker types who film themselves throughout each and every day, no matter how mundane the task. You have fortitude.

  2. Your Vimeo video was fine. Visual and audio crystal clear. IMHFO much better than YT

InDesign is awesome. I learned to use it over many hours on lynda.com (which is now LinkedIn Learning). Broke away from Adobe when they went with subscription model a while ago but still occasionally use InDesign when I have to. Agree 100% on biz v. photography and a lot more in the video.

YT was a stepping stone on the journey to expressing yourself the way you want to. It brought you to many people and brought those people to you. No reason to wonder why used it and no reason to continue using it if that’s what you want to do.

  3. Haven’t watched the video yet. Vimeo is such a more pleasant place. There are incredible films there. The actual mechanics of the site are pretty lousy, though – and I’m 99% just a viewer. But YT is just AWFUL. I was always grateful that most of your vids were both on YT and at Shifter.

  4. Hell YES Dan! That looks good. Not sure who was filling your head with such nonsense, but having been at the helm of an art department pushing out content for three action sports brands several years ago we used Vimeo extensively for many years before switching to the dregs that was (and still is) YT because of the “searchability” and larger built in audience. Looking forward to the up & coming Trade Book Workshop, I signed up today. 🙌🙌

  5. Vimeo has always been better looking than YouTube. I heard that they made a deal with Patreon to host maker’s videos at a rate that wasn’t survivable for Vimeo ( nice goin’ there guys) and there was some upheaval about how to undo it…. I heard initially they started trying to enforce some draconian pricing. I’m not sure what happened — not my world. But watch for bait and switch pricing

  6. Vimeo works well for me. Especially the fact that I’m not suckered into another video right after watching yours, which will eventually become two hours lost watching backpack reviews while waiting for my Goruck to be delivered from the other side of the world.

Yes! That is how it works! I use my Goruck almost every day. This morning I weighted 170lbs. This is WAY more than I’ve ever weighted. And I’m not fat. My pants barely fit and my neck looks like I’m on the juice.

    2. While waiting for the Goruck, I’ve built a ruck bag from my old Peak Design, with dumbbells inside. I can only fit 20lbs, and I can only walk pretty slow since I’m always with my wife and newborn baby right now, but my legs have grown big in two weeks. Can’t wait to receive the GR1 plus the 30lbs plate.

  7. The radical vertical impact simulator makes a striking (pun intended) metaphor for much of social media consumption and creation. Each foray into YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and the like often results in a deep dive and eventual “radical vertical impact” crash. Which is why I have a growing library of books and select blogs to read, including Shifter. As for Vimeo, I like the quality but don’t know about hosting.

That’s because the designers know human chemistry and they know what they are doing design wise. I’ve said before, Instagram is the most potent weapon I’ve ever seen.

  8. Yeah I was just poking at you because I’ve heard your take on drones. Dark eyed Juncos. I’m a raptor lover that’s why I asked about the Coopers.

  9. Works just fine for me. Even in a test video you tried to convey bit of wisdom and info packed in it. Wonderful. Hope to see more of you on Vimeo. All the best with your project and have signed up for the upcoming Blurb Trade Book workshop, today !

  10. Looks good.

Your wife has it sussed. Most of us (that I knew as fellow snappers) had lousy business heads. Beyond that, there were other personality issues at work, holding us back. In my case, one of those was simply that when busy there was no time to seek new clients, and when there was the time, the lack of work made me feel so humble that I didn’t even want to see anybody new. I guess that’s where agents come in.

However, there was also the fact that pricing wars meant a race to the bottom. I have always felt that there was a golden age when pricing wasn’t key, but that it just didn’t last. I think I got in during that last years of that happy period but also witnessed its demise. Without the calendars I think my period would have ended years earlier. Ultimately, nobody really knows; you can’t run the same race twice in two different ways.

Race to the bottom certainly described a significant portion of the business. Stock, for example. But young photographers got used to giving their work away, and that was all she wrote.

  11. Looks great, Milnor. I am looking forward to seeing more of these from you. You are good to go. I have been posting my documentary work on Vimeo since 2010. I love that I can replace a video without losing statistics, as most of my short films are ongoing and have multiple versions. Vimeo tends to be a more mature audience too who are generally supportive and offer constructive feedback and no ads. I like Vimeo because it’s community driven by artists, filmmakers and professionals whereas YouTube is better known for a wide variety of content from amateur clips to professionals. Hope that helps.

  12. It works! Not in this case, but there have been times when I’ve come across a Vimeo link that required registration to view it.

InDesign is not bad; it’s the only truly functional professional layout software for print that I know of. However, it needs a redesign and a better interface. Since it’s now used by only a few professionals, Adobe has significantly neglected it compared to its more famous software like Photoshop or Illustrator. Nonetheless, once you’ve mastered the basics, you can do some interesting things, but only if you understand the principles of design, which are far more important than the tool itself; but you already knew this.

Anyway, it’s a pleasure to watch you again.

  13. You must feel as if you’ve been drag training with YouTube tied behind you like an anchor — and now that you’ve cut the cord, you’re off and running! Right on!

I’d love to find some quick-start InDesign resources. What did you use to get up to speed on that program in two weeks? Thanks for checking!

Well, Blurb plugin is a must for me to get the document created correctly. The rest is based on Abobe tutorials and also the residue of things I learned over the past years. And then, just practice.

  14. Hello Dan,

My first comment to you since leaving YT. When you started talking about your CF card being home, I winched, even cried a little on the inside for you. Rewind 3 weeks ago, I was out at local spot near a couple of bald eagle nests, and the eagles were playing nice for the few early morning photog’s, showing off their fishing skills. I couldn’t have been more excited, grabbed my camera, jumped out of the truck, made it over to a covered area, flipped the switch to on, put camera to eye, focused, hit that beautiful shutter button for an amazing fishing shot………welp……almost. Flipping CF card was home on the table because I was moving the pictures off to a couple of external drives and failed to put the card back in the camera. Of course my body has dual slots, but did I have a card in the second slot to save my bacon, nope.

Anyway, your test video came across just fine. I am enjoying your content here, not going to lie, I do miss your YT video’s, but understand 100%. Looking forward to what you create and post here.

    Be well Dan. Stay safe.

    Mike
