Creative: Things Are About To Take Off

On a serious note, things are about to explode when it comes to my Blurb events and travel. Society of Photographic Education.

You see what I did there? The title and this image, so together it makes my heart hurt. Those are all fake ducks. Artificial intelligence all the way baby, no need to ever experience nature again. No need to shower, leave the house, interact with fellow humans or vote. I think this AI thing is gonna be great for all of us. On a serious note, things are about to explode when it comes to my Blurb events and travel. This is a semi-reflection of my life prior to the global pandemic.

There were times in the pre-world when I would travel for seven, eight, nine weeks straight.

Traversing countries, continents and sometimes the solar system but I’m not at liberty to discuss those trips. Things have been slowly opening up and now the gates are fully open. Think Coachella on opening night or maybe Best Buy on Black Friday. I want that 96-inch plasma and your family is not going to stop me. Now move aside or I will cast a spell with my Dungeons and Dragons style wizard robe.

On tap later this week, Society of Photographic Education annual conference. Here is my goal. Bring you along with me via a series of blog posts, like I used to do in the pre-world. In fact, this was one of my favorite things to do. Simple copy and photos blog posts that sum up some of my findings. I am attending this conference, so not staffing a booth or anything like that. This means I have freedom to talk to people, move around, attend lectures, and learn, learn, learn.

Historically, this group has entirely blown me away with the quality of work, quality of concept, and quality of delivery of these stories to the masses. Book deals, gallery shows, museum shows, and public art installations are being dominated by the educators and not the super-hip, trendy commercial folks. I’ve said this before, this was a surprise to me, so I’m guessing it might be a surprise to you. Sure, there might be sandals and Subarus, but damnit if that just doesn’t matter in the end.

I’ve also got trips to New York, London, Barcelona, and Amsterdam in the coming months. I am doing Blurb events, but I am also thinking of doing some informal reviews if you will. Photography and book critique, whatever you want to call it. Meet me in a coffeeshop, or my hotel lobby and let’s have a look. I know that many of you have expressed frustration at not being able to get real reviews. Well, if you find me a worthy reviewer and you dwell in one of these locales, let me know. I’d be happy to review your efforts, and if you are nice I’ll wear my wizard robe.

  1. If ai could fix it so I don’t have to enter my email every time they might have something. I know they it can write code but I’m expecting an end to end solution. The barrier to entry keeps dropping but the problem is still the same. To receive the recognition we all want we must still influence the powers that be and the consumers of our effort.

  2. The Amsterdam window of opportunity is worth investigating if time and recourses can be spend on a trip up north in order to just meet and have a chat. No need for review, just a good chat with a book wizard is sufficient. Coffee will be on me Dan.

  3. I’m three hours away from NYC in a very rural areas of NE PA. Hey, I would drive down for coffee and a review of my first draft Blurb book that arrived in the mail today. The draft is sixty photos edited down from about 250 taken at a county fair from 2012 to 2023. That’s it so far. However, my ongoing plan is to include a short history of Wade Shows – the ‘forefront of the industry.’ Also, some history of this particular 160 year old fair. Anyway, some fresh, experienced eyes would be a real godsend. And, I’ll be nice.

Here’s the thing. NYC is the ONE stop where I have extremely limited time. I would have for you to come all that way and not be able to get what you want. I think it’s safer to wait till the next trip. This one was cut short for a variety of reasons.

  4. Hmm. Sorry, Dan, if my comment is coming through twice. I previously wrote that I would make the three hour drive from rural NE PA to NYC to seek your expert advice on my Blurb book, the first draft, that arrived today. I’ve photographed the same local county fair for the past thirteen years. I’ve edited from about 250 pics to 60 so far. The plan is to write, or have a better writer than me, write a brief history of Wade Shows, Inc.; as well as, a short history of this particular 160 year old fair. A fresh set of experienced eyes would be a godsend. I know you are a worthy reviewer. I do promise to be nice.

  5. That picture actually started giving me a headache (!)

“I’ve also got trips to New York, London, Barcelona, and Amsterdam… “. I don’t see Seattle in the mix so I guess we won’t be crossing paths in June. Perhaps another day.

Have a great time city hopping and looking forward to whatever you post along the way!
