Creative: The Ann & Dan Show

“I’m glad you are starting the recording now because we always say cool shit and then ask, ‘ Why didn’t we record this?”

What follows is a simple conversation between two creatives. For those of you who follow Blurb live events, you will recognize Ann Orman, a New Zealand-based commercial and travel photographer. She and I have done several live events, and during the planning, we had several conversations. These conversations led us to create the film you see here. Two creatives talking. That’s it. That’s all. Enjoy.

  1. Enjoyed.
Sometimes you have to find the materials that work best for you, and the best size surface for you to draw on. Do you do better with large arm movements, or minute little drawings. One of my bosses took my pencil from me and broke it in half, and handed me a thick felt pen to draw with. That sure sped things up. You can cut out and collage the good bits of several attempts together. Drawing is like photography- Editing! What do you see about the scene that interests you? Focus on that, get that one bit down on the paper, and the rest of the bits that are necessary can be added. You don’t have to draw the whole thing. Also, btw, the mountain scene, or any natural subject is more forgiving as a subject than a man or machine made object.
Also, drawing is a skill that can be lost if you don’t keep practicing. I speak from experience.

  2. Fun conversation. You chatted about saving up and spending the time to go to Europe. We think the same going to New Zealand. 13 hrs or so from Vancouver BC. First trip was just over 2 months, and the second was 7 weeks. Would love to go again, and this time get north of Auckland. Business class is the only way to fly for those distances.

One of the reasons I like event photography is that there is no re-dos. That moment at the hot corner or finish line is there and gone. Keeps me sharp. I’ve pretty well stopped looking at social media and a lot of the headline news because I realized I couldn’t do anything about it and it just made me feel bad. I got involved in my local community association instead. So much good stuff happening there. So much fun taking photos of community events.
