“Promise me you didn’t kill anyone,” she said moving across the parking lot. Hood up, eyes down. Finger flicking for a nonexistent cigarette, pants splattered with paint from a long distant job. Back when she had jobs. Now, there was only one task at hand; survival. And survival meant being resourceful and being unmerciful. Her molecules were no longer her own. She had become a product. Produced and packaged in Wuhan, marketed and sold in the greater Seattle area. And this shit, well, it sold itself and so did she.

The supplier was both known and unknown.

A man, presumably. Foreign, most certainly. Isolated, insulated, nearly untouchable. Driven by something. Call it greed, economics, Capitalism or God and country. He was here and he had taken over. Silently, quietly, and most importantly, legally. Paperwork filed, boxes ticked and checked and double checked. Legal distribution. Heck, officially sanctioned. The stamp of approval matching the blue scorpion stamp of his own. A color and form representing potency and zero margin for error.

Although it appeared so, he was not alone. Far from it. Legions of major and minor players, supporting roles and managerial positions were constantly being created and filled. This was the most powerful corporate entity the world had ever known, surpassing Apple and Google and every other civilian led, power-driven business. The only world above them was government and even our best and brightest were in on this too. Red, Blue, Black, White. Equal opportunity. Operation this or that, keeping the cycle moving.

Nearing the edge of the parking lot she noticed…..

To be continued.

  1. Words oozing out of a picture. It’s the logic itself. But normally these words stay in my brain and disappear violently quick afterwards. You did the unlogical for me, there’re noted. And stay forever now, ready to be taken apart by al of us word predators. Whooomp. Magic. Thanks Dan.
