Creative: Raw Society, Menorca Exhibition

Raw Society exhibition, Menorca, Spain. One hundred and seven images. Documentary work, exhibited for the public.

I don’t often find myself being jealous. There are plenty of people I admire, but jealously has never really been my thing, until now. I have to admit, when I look at what Christelle and Jorge have created with Raw Society, I’m a bit jealous. And let us not forget Mei, Studio Manager. This is a real community, with real classes, education, workshops, feedback, travel and more.

Over the course of our book workshop in Menorca, I was able to spend a bit more time with Christelle and Jorge, and also had more time to look at their work. They were in the process of editing for a show and also editing for a book. When I got a sneak peak at the exhibition and book, I was blown away by the quality of the photography. And jealous. Sure.

Well, the show is real. See both attachments.

The exhibition space in Menorca is fantastic. In fact, “It looks fake.” (inside joke) And as you can see below, they are getting good press. Shows like this aren’t common in Menorca, which makes this all that much better. It also ensures that non-photography people will be engaging with the work. Creating for the photography world is one thing. Creating for the public is something else. If you find yourself in the area, have a look. Building something like Raw Society isn’t easy. Nor is maintaining it. I tip my hat to anyone who builds for community as well as themselves. And getting your mugshots in the paper is maybe the best part. Parents love this stuff.
