Finally, I get back to some good questions and answers. As I mentioned before, I’m at the center of a communication blizzard, one of my own making. Consequently, I get asked a wide range of “this or that” questions. Some of these questions can be answered with a simple “Yes,” or “No,” while others require a bit more lift. Also, sometimes the answers we receive make us uncomfortable. This is natural and part of life. Truth will set you free, but first it might rake you over the coals and force you to question your entire existence, but I would rather find myself in a ball, sobbing over my lack of direction, than pretend to live the online lie. Be positive, make good things.

For those amused by the closed captioning, it’s Antonin Kratochvic. Our library doesn’t have anything for him. Sigh. Though I did see a part 6 of a Canon interview video with him, but couldn’t find parts 1 to 5 before it was time to babysit the barbecue rack of lamb for lunch. Yes some things come before photography. Loved your ruminations on workflow. Camera to phone to books. Can’t get much simpler than that.

Also Dan Winter’s book “Road to Seeing” I got my local library to order it. and have checked it out and read it a couple of times. He does some amazing portraits, and talks about the process.
Greg Girard has a show in the local gallery, a career retrospective of his work. I had a quick look last night at the very crowded opening, and will go back for a longer look. All his work has that raw, gritty look that comes from the place and the subjects, (not a preset) including his portraits. Part of it is he is making portraits in their own environments. Statements about the work on the walls of the exhibit made an interesting read, as they were first person accounts of his motivations, thoughts and feelings while he was making the work. I first saw his night photos of the Kowloon walled city on a local TV show, and all the different colours of light at night in his photos of the old buildings made me want to go out and make night photos.

Yes, amazing book. It’s in the background when I’m recording myself. Girard has a look, a look that doesn’t exist anymore, or one that is fading rapidly. Love his work, and he’s a cool guy, too.
