Creative: Question and Answer 57

Welcome, friends. I’m back with yet another Question-and-Answer film although this is more of me talking than actual questions. But what else are you going to do? It’s my channel. Thank you to those of you coming over from YouTube. I know how difficult it can be to pull yourself away from that black hole and travel to a stand-alone site.

  1. 1:35, Do I miss YouTube?
  2. 5.00, Beau Miles
  3. 7:30, What is my upcoming travel schedule?
  4. 15:30, How is the Japan Workshop coming along? https://www.wideanglecreative.com/japan-september-2024
  5. 17:40, How was AIPAD?
  6. 20:09, Explain the multi-book strategy.
  7. 24:18, How important is writing?
  8. 25:15, Nikon/Fuji?

  1. Would be fun to shake hands. Let me know if you’ve got a spare hour in Eindhoven to buy you a coffee! It’s a 30min drive from where I live. Could also go for an evening bike ride if it fits, as a proper Dutch I’ve got multiple bikes which I can take with me.

Weekends in Amsterdam aren’t going to work for me.

I should, yes. Come hang out with us. I’ll be shooting during those days but should have time later in the day/evening. You can meet my wife and my colleague Bjorn.

  2. I only happened upon your videos a couple of months ago as I was exploring how to print a book. I am a conceptual photographer and I have a five-year project that I was really proud of and finally ready to get a book printed. I really enjoyed listening to you and I totally understand the YouTube thing. It’s so easy to waste a couple of hours watching YouTube videos. Thank you for all of your knowledge and opinion, and I hope you have a great day!

Hey, glad you found me here. I’m hoping this site becomes a good resource for you. There is already a lot of book content in my archives, just so you know. Anything in particular I can help with, let me know.

  3. I plan on being at your Seattle PCNW walks on June 8 and June1 15. I checked the PCNW event calendar and neither date has your photo walks… (?!?)

Please send any details you wish to share…

And to answer your questions on wasting time:

FB – maybe 10-15 minutes a week and often not even that
IG – I discovered recently that I have an IG account because I have an FB account (?); never used the IG account
YT – No account. I spent a few minutes last week figuring out a feature on my camera. I don’t remember when I used it before that for anything other than Shifter videos. Now that you are no longer using YT I have little reason to go there for anything other than quick fix lookups.

TikTok, Snapchat, Twitter, Pinterest, Reddit, LinkedIn, Threads, Mastadon, etc, etc, etc… no account for any of these, no interest in getting one.

  4. Daniel San: tried to order the Remo book last week after your post and my order initially got fulfilled, then abruptly cancelled by Amazon. I’m assuming it sold out. You might owe Remo a beer… 🍺

  6. Beau Miles is awesome. It was cool to have you mention him. I bought his book about a year ago.

  7. I’ve been watching Beau Miles for a while now. I bought his book. Also because I’m Canadian the Baird brothers and another Canadian chap Kevin Callen the KCHappyCamper. YouTube does have some uses like you said in previous videos before.

  8. Quite a bit of travelling. Unfortunately can’t make it work due to my schedule. Maybe I’ll have more luck next time. Are you planning to visit this year’s Paris Photo?

As always, thanks for sharing your take on book publishing. My recent photo failures make me want to create a great book of failures, that could be fun 😉

  9. Superb.
Ive been binging on your videos for a few weeks now.
The posts and videos about personal projects, books, and zines have resonated with me, in a big way. The concept of myself as the audience…mind blown.

This is the piece that “post-social me” was missing. So obvious now that it’s in front of me, but damn. Illuminated.

    Cheers!

PS: Vimeo is much better than YouTube. No more dancing for the algorithm.

Yes, YT is in my rearview. Done. Over. And so happy about that. I am fortunate, create for myself. No need to show off or act in ways that build following but kill who I really am. If you can do this too, as least part of the time, my guess is you will be happier.

  10. It would be nice to meet in Eindhoven. Only about an hour by car from Antwerp, Belgium. Please let me know time and place that suits you best.

    2. Hi Dan,
Another potential photowalk participant for Amsterdam on 2nd of june calling in here. Any details on the net available yet? I can hop on a train for a direct connection of 2hrs from Antwerp.
The classic Q&A in Soundcloud for me, but Vimeo and your facial expressions makes it all worth the look :-)) Thanks!

  11. Hey Daniel, nice to hear more from you. I love what your bring up there on the internet which is so different.
You don’t offer anwser but questions. You let space for people to think with their own minds and this is a great gift – thank you.
What happened to your tour to Berlin ? I don’t think I heard that on the list ?
Also quite weird question but : Isn’t it exhausting to be always on the moove, always grinding for new projects/books/artists/people and to what extend that does that energy expense participate in your overall happiness/well being or the other way around – exhaustion/suffering ?
    Have a great trip !

Thank you Simon. Very kind of you. Berlin is still on, but not until 2025. We are looking at March during the Month of Photography. A workshop and then some exploration. Will add your question to my next Q&A.

  12. Hello Daniel,

I have been following your YoutTube channel for a long while and always appreciated your tough love and Q&A videos. The series on sequencing was really interesting – I really want to get an edtor to mentor me to learn to edit and sequence my images better.
I’m looking forward to meeting you in London on May 12th, and I would love to come on Tuesday morning, the 14th, with my portfolio: I would really appreciate your opinion. I will be following you here on your website, and soon start to work on putting together books and magazines of my work.

  13. Dan. I signed up for the June 8th photo walk and meet. Hopefully my schedule doesn’t derail before then. The Henry Art Gallery has a Hank Willis Thomas exhibit that will still be going while you’re here.

  14. I mean, when I’m not planning on selling or even showing a photobook, or magazine or a promo with anyone does it really matter why I’m making other than I enjoy doing it? I understand the question for people who are making a product and have to deal with an audience but I’m not dealing with that. I’m just trying to create something worth more than an Instagram post.
