Creative: New York City Photowalk

It feels like that time of year again, and it is. It’s time for another New York City Photowalk, with Blurb hovering over us like a protective blanket. I’ll be there with my flawed neck and trusty camera(s). And New York will present the visual tapestry. I’ve seen one person bite another person on a NYC photowalk. It’s a true story. I heard my name being called from across the street, and when I turned to see who it was, an older woman approached the man calling to me and chomped down on his arm. She was arrested.

To be accurate, this was peripheral to the photowalk. I was on a walk, but the man yelling at me recognized me and wanted to say hello. Would he have been protected had he been on the walk? We will never know. If you are worried, don’t be. Photography, good photography, is an adventure. If you always know what will happen, your pictures will never cross any upper threshold.

Be bold.

New York is always a good time when it comes to these events. Others cities are a bit more challenging and don’t provide such constant stimulation. New York is New York, and did I mention we should be dangerously close to spring migration? There could be some feathered crazies off course and ready for us to pounce. If you are interested in taking a few hours to wander and shoot, come see us. If you have Blurb or general book questions, come see us.

  1. Man, events like this have me half-wishing I was closer to the good ol’ US of A. But nah, life’s plonked me 16,000km away (that’s 9,999 miles plus a kangaroo’s hop) on the wild western fringe of the Land Down Under. Didn’t you roll through these parts a while back, Dan? Maybe one day, if the stars quit their stubborn streak, I’ll nab a spot at one of your photowalks in the land of the free. Or, hear me out—if your creaky neck’s up for it, maybe you could twist an arm or two at Blurb for a ‘photo / book trip’ down here, *wink wink*? Either way, I’m promising BBQ beef steaks with no sneaky tariffs, just good vibes and a couple of cold beers. Bonus: you’ll meet our high-flying feathered locals; some will pose for your lens, others will eyeball you like you owe ‘em cash. Either way fair dinkum fun, mate!

  2. This looks fun. Will see if I can get enough work done in the next two weeks to justify taking the time off on a weekday. Is there a limit to numbers/reservations? Maybe I had better plan early…

    2. Thanks. Hoping to be there. It just occurred to me, the last time I did this kind of thing was a B&H photo walk in Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Bridge circa 2010. Time flies (and life is too short, as someone else here commented).

I think one of the things you might find interesting is how Instagram has impacted the area. It’s still on the addict’s list of places to snap themselves. 2010 it had yet to be ruined. Like so many other places.

    4. Right! I don’t recall when Instagram started, but recall seeing something about it (I guess around 2010 or soon after) and wondered why people wanted to have square photos, not sharp, with colour casts that looked like the photos I took in 1985 on the Kodak Instamatic camera (126 format, square photos) that my mum had been given as a teenager in the 1960s. I don’t necessarily mind “retro”, but trends dictated by technology and social media are best avoided as much as possible. Fortunately, I still have all the negatives of my mid-1980s “documentary work” – Maybe I should scan them while that “1990s aesthetic” (as I heard it once described – yes, 1990s, not 80s) is still cool 🙂

    5. Even weirder: Now my comments have appeared (was just notified by email) but there’s a photo of a person who is not me…
