Creative: Image Breakdown, Street Photography

I know what you are thinking. “Dan Milnor and street photography?” Is this the sign of the apocalypse? It might be. The truth is, I suggested it. I did. I suggested it, and Blurb put our “Image Breakdown-Street Photography in motion. Now, I’m committed to looking at numerous bodies of street photography. Why would I do this to myself after what I’ve said about street photography? Because so many of you love street photography, as do many of my students, and I already spend a lot of time looking at this genre of work. So, why not?

Just last week, I gave feedback on a book of street photography.

Although I think much of what I see is fairly “detached” work, I occasionally see solid groups of street images. Street photography is accessible, and it’s all too popular on YouTube, the reason many people are drawn to it. I hope that photographers use their street images to graduate to “attached” photography. Such as long-term projects and people-based work where the photographer must engage and become part of the story. I know not everyone wants to do this kind of work, but based on feedback, many others do. So, let’s talk about street photography and what we can learn from this genre.
