Hey Kids, My time at YouTube has come and gone. I’m not slamming the door, but I don’t have any plans to post here regularly ever again. My online life will transfer back to Shifter.media where all things Dan will thrive. I will continue to make films. Hopefully, these films will be longer, better, and more meaningful. These future films will be hosted on Vimeo and posted on Shifter.media. I plan to FINALLY begin sending an email newsletter to teach others how to do the same because when it comes to selling books, there is nothing better than a serious newsletter database. (Many people come to me for help selling their books.)

My primary delivery mechanism will be stills and copy.

My first love. If you take a look at the post from two days ago, the post regarding documentary photography vs street photography, you will see and read the kind of thing I’m most happy sharing. However, although photography is important, it ain’t the only thing, so I will also continue to post things that I feel will make all of us better human beings. The only benefit of YouTube is YOU. You have made this worthwhile for me. Hopefully, we remain amigos and I see you at Shifter. Thank you! Siempre juntos.

  1. Been following you from a safe distance since stumbling across Ingrid Spangler’s 2012 interview.

Your doing this has been a long time coming and I very much look forward to this next chapter in your digital life.

  2. Hey Daniel, I’ve been stalki….following you for a long time now and, actually, find this video to come out at just the right moment for me. I’m a photographer from the UK, I’m 52 and pretty much had enough of social media. There’s something to the old adage “If you don’t pay for the product, then YOU are the product”. I finally sacked Facebook this week, and that’s me pretty much done. I would dearly miss seeing your transparent glasses, and harbouring mild jealousy over your backpack, so I’ve bookmarked your site and will sign up to your newsletter forthwith.

Totally understand your reasonings with leaving YouTube. I’m there with you mate.

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Hey Michael, life beyond FB is FARRRR better than life on FB. I have a sinking suspicion you will have a new lease on life. Same for IG. And yes, the platforms were built to sell you. It has nothing to do with photography or building community, that is the for the press release. I’ll still make films but rarely.

  3. Hey Daniel, I’ve stalke….followed you for a long time now, and have always enjoyed your videos. I find this one meets me at just the right time. I’m a photographer based in the south of the UK, I’m 52 and pretty had enough with all the shenanigans of social media. I never get through spending time there and think “yep, that was time well spent!”. So, only this week I jacked in Facebook, and that’s me pretty much done with social media. I feel better for it.

Of course, you no longer being on YouTube means I would miss looking at your transparent glasses and mildly drooling over your backpack, so I’ve just signed up to the newsletter, and will be enjoying the content on your website instead. Thanks for sticking with the videos though…they really quite good. SO good in fact, that when you made the video about creating one copy of a zine, it was the kick up the backside I needed to finally make my own, which I did last year. Very happy with that!

Anyway, I’m going off now to make a nice coffee and have my dinner 🍽️

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

  4. Hi Daniel,

I have always admired your approach to photography and it has taught me some valuable lessons, as I never had a photographic mentor. I wish you luck with your new endeavor and I am already looking forward to what you will put out.

    Thank you!

    Ash

  5. I have often said – in fact daily, that I have NO purpose using Instagram. The powers that be in the wedding space though, they all say, use it, post, share, like etc etc…”you’ll get all the leads there” – horseshit. Well, maybe for some, but for me, It’s never really served any purpose financially. It allows me to DM people, but that’s IT. And if those people don’t want to jump on a call to move on to the next level of communication (or the first) then I’m out. Anyway, I’ve been on the fence for weeks about it and today I’m shutting it down. Right after this comment – I’m done. Daniel, I met you years ago in Toronto at Contact, and your post about wedding photography on smogranch was my go to for inspiration believe it or not. I’ve been in the wedding world for twenty LONG years and this year I’m done as well. Anyway – I hope to keep seeing your videos and posts here because as far as I’m concerned you’re THE voice of reason in this crazy photography world.

    1. I could not agree more with your last sentence. But i would leave thenphotography out. The whole crazy world.

  6. Hi Dan, it’s been a blast! As long as you’ll keep your podcast running, we’re gonna be just fine 😉

  7. Awesome Photos! Two questions? How close were you to the lightning in that shot? And how did you get the surf photo?

  8. You made some very interesting and creative videos Dan and addressed some photography topics that I have not seen discussed elsewhere – so kudos to you. The videos have been entertaining as well! I’m looking forward to the pieces you will share in the future at shifter.meda.

  9. Hey Dan! I gave up on YouTube a while ago. I jump on now and again to see if you have uploaded anything but that’s about it.
The thing that finally made me quit was a film I watched from a guy talking about making long form work. Turned out that his idea of long form work was about 20mins! I give up!

Yes, that is the common trend now. I’ve seen exhibitions from work shot over a two-day period. Now, if we are talking something like January 6th, okay, doable, but not a “Long term” project.

  10. For those, such as I, who know not the practical difference between YT and Vimeo – Vimeo seems to keep asking me for personal ID before I can watch much on it – what are you gaining from switching? Do you evade censorship of some kind? Is there a cost factor involved?

As your stuff is already “favourited”, and the heading here as I write on the iPad is shifter.media, am I correct to expect to notice no difference to catching you in the future by using my existing link? To quote: old people and technology. 😉

  11. I have enjoyed listening to your podcasts and watching your videos, thank you for your time. I think the self-hosted site will once again be the way to go for many creative types as the social platforms burn down a bit (by their own doing). I wish you great success on deploying your latest plan. Now if only we can bring back the bulletin boards… haha no wait, I take that thought back, that would be bad.

  12. I will miss your insights and thoughts expressed via youtube, but look forward to the newsletters and staying connected through shifter.media. Your authentic and informed perspective really cut through the clutter and B.S. of the photo-guru-expert youtube social media metaverse noise.

  13. I’m a long time follower of the Youtube channel and Shifter.media via RSS. It is one of the few feeds I will tend to read on the actual site for it’s purposeful design, great layout, fonts and overpowering size. Having the “front page” be just the most recent post is a wonderful choice. I look forward to see how it evolves with more of Charlene’s hard work. (And could it be that she’s reviving her blog also? She just posted for the first time in ages.)

I praise your enthusiastic return to the potency of stills and words (and hopefully a resurgence of the podcast too.)

And I won’t say how long ago it was that I signed up for the newsletter 🤫.

  14. Your channel was a breath of fresh air in the swirling mess of gear schilling review channels, overblown egos and people trading off other peoples’ work. I hope you can find the time to podcast every now and then. As much as my family hates to see me laughing at your puking stories, it’s the only break they get from me banging on about art and photography. Adios amigo.

The first two I understand, but watching young film photographers rip off legends is never fun. There used to be a penalty for that sort of thing but the online world is one, enormous ethics violation.
