Adventure: Visual Diary #007

Permalink 14 Comments

The only purpose of this series is to share some of the things that happen behind the Blurb/Photographic scenes of my life. I no longer spend every waking moment working on photography projects and books although these two things are not only very important to me they will also feature more and more on my upcoming “Milnor 3.0” community. But for now, these films are here to shine a light on what else I do. I don’t share everything, but I hope that some of you who lead more adventurous lives will find humor or something to relate to. My smoothie recipe comes near the end.

Not even a piece really. Maybe a hint. It’s gonna be a while but I did find the platform I’m going to use and and know how I want the work structured. Should be fun and challenging.

  1. Dan and the blender scene: are you sure you’re not one of the guy’s in Winslow’s “The Force”? I’m pretty sure now after seeing this. Lots and lots of laughter in the behind the scenes movie which will be primed for the real clients behind the paywall. You’re coming closer and closer to the YT characters I swipe away after the publicity hits in. Maybe it’s one of your plans. Jumping on one leg for now.

  2. Maybe the daily routine diary hits me in the wrong way. It’s a mixed bag. Maybe I’m not a good YT viewer @ all (the more I view the tube, the more I’m sure I will stop watching it in the very nearby future ). So for now I’ll stick only with the For what it’s worth tubes as they resonate more with my interests. Re. The Force: Malone is the best of both worlds: he’s the best cop, but he’s also cheating as hell and critisises “the system”…

It’s just a look at what else is happening in my life, outside of the photography stuff. The point isn’t to make something with an angle. I for one realize what a mistake it was to spend my life myopically focused on photography. I hope others can see some of these other activities and realize that just being a photographer isn’t that interesting. I still love photography, and it will play a major part in my new “idea” of how I want to move forward online but it ain’t the only thing for me….

  3. Collagen powder, grass fed whey protein powder and frozen avocado chunks, but mostly the same. I also use that same beetroot powder.

I forgot about collagen. I use that too but didnt’ buy any here in Maine. Avocado is proof there is a higher power. Can’t get enough. Beets are the legal PED.

  4. Dan, how would you cope with a truly simple and honest Mediterranean diet, devoid of all that packaged stuff you consume?

I guess the cultural separation between the US and much of the rest of the western world is more than language.

On the non-dietary side: “I for one realize what a mistake it was to spend my life myopically focused on photography.” I’m kinda slipping ever more into the same conclusion about myself. It was an obsession from the start, and maybe only obsession can make it work for any length of time; why, otherwise, would anyone take all the crap that accompanies it? I guess the trouble is that we all know who the greats are in our own spheres, and unless we can achieve as they have, there lingers ever a sense of failure, however surprising our own achieved successes might be. It could be worse: we could have tried a career in acting or music.

Let’s just be grateful for small mercies. Or in you case, for being the man who got away?

Hey Rob, I do eat a lot of Med food. I’m not sure what all the “packaged food” is that you are referring to. Beet powder? And ya, the life of singular focus on photography doesn’t work for me anymore. And my guess is that most of the people who do this are annoying more than anything else. Photography has been so obliterated due to volume and social greed. Those who can only talk the photo talk don’t seem to realize that most people just don’t care.

  5. Really enjoyed this. Not sure why it seems to have rubbed some people the wrong way. I hate YouTube. This doesn’t seem YouTube to me at all, in a good way. I went through a big smoothie phase. Even got a Vitamix. But then I wanted to go back to just buying some fruit and eating it. Turns out I’m not great at that. I love fruit, but I’m not an awesome shopper (I’m an sbhopper!). Maybe I’ll go back to smoothies.

People are looking for things to be upset about. And people only want that they want. I don’t care. I’m gonna make what I want to make otherwise I’d be running in circles trying to appease one group or another. I get these messages from people literally demanding I only make films about ONE thing. And they go as far as saying “You need to stop talking about “x” or I’m going to stop watching. What they seemingly don’t understand is me saying “Go away.” I think so many people are so beholden to the algorithm or beholden to trying to make their living from YouTube that they have to pay attention to those people.

  6. Thanks Dan for your honest reply on my maybe over the edge comments. I wasn’t in any kind trying to offend you or anyone else. My apologies if so.

It’s impossible to offend me. I just wasn’t sure what you meant. The thing is, I’m going to make what I feel like making. I’m also going to make what I think the audience needs but may or may not know they need it. I made the mistake of making my life entirely about photography for WAY too long. I find most photo types these days to be fairly boring people who have a narrow view of things. All of the things in this film, the fishing and cycling for example, are on equal ground with photography, at least for me. And frankly, I meet far more interesting people in the cycling and fishing communities than I do in the photography world where everyone is so self-absorbed and so focused on self-promotion.
Another thing about a film like this is thinking about the background of what those scenes mean. The film reveals SO much about me and my “life education” if you will. It shows I have multiple skillsets that folks will look past because they only want to see and hear me talk about photography. How do I know how to drive a boat? How about trailering a boat? How do I know how to fish and read water? Several people made comments about the fishing saying things like “Oh, I could never do that because it’s so boring.” And then the same people admitted they had never been fishing. This is a reality in a world where everyone is online all the time and real life becomes boring. Dopamine junkies who label anything they can’t comprehend as “boring” or “trivial” or “stupid.” I feel bad for these folks because unless they break that cycle they will end up painted into a corner. Most of them end up as passive aggressive contrarian types who say outlandish things at parties because they need that dopamine spike that comes from verbal confrontation.
The diary films are fun to make. Simple, fast, and quite different from the other films I’m on the hook to make.
