If you don’t fish you might not understand what seeing this small container does to me. This small container, gifted to me by “Mr. Flyfishing Magazine Total Cover Photography Stud,” Jeff Edvalds, is an instant time machine back to my childhood. Specifically, to small town Wyoming where my mother taught me to fish the dry fly. And for you bait fisherman hammered twelve packs from a lounge chair, I love you too. But for me, the dry fly, like Norman Maclean, is where glory lives.
Fishing puts me in places I want to be. It’s that simple. I’m not an expert. Far from it. Jeff asked me a few questions and I answered like Cruiser in Stripes. “There was one?” I love to fish because I love to be in the wild places where the fishing is best. You can fish ponds on an inner city golf course. And with enough whip hits that can be fun, but I’d rather drive, hike, climb and descend my way down to remote aloneness.
It’s been far too long since I wet a line. I think about it on a weekly basis, and now that I’m back in New Mexico for a two month stretch, it’s time to renew my license. My fishing gear lives in my bathroom, my favorite room in the house. The only place I can get away from my wife, and even then I have to lock the door and hold my bear spray. The place I will venture to first haunts my mental playing field. Just off the edge of my responsibilities. I’ll get there, sooner or later. Thanks Jeff!

Where I grew up we had a river, not a big river but it looked big as an eight year old. Fishing was a 12 foot bamboo pole and probably 50 lb. test muskie live with a hook and a worm. All to catch chub and sunfish. Great memories

Was up in the PNW recently and got back into fly fishing after a long time. Literally got “bit” and now my daily thoughts are consumed by visions of being on a small stream or in the mountains with fish rising and the line rolling out. Somehow makes me feel very connected; there is a sort of zen/peace feeling to the entire experience.

I’m a country folk. Fishing is awesome especially on a river bank. Hubby and I have been teaching our 5 year old son how to cast.
