Adventure: Patagonia Workshop: 2027

So, you want to go to Patagonia? I don’t blame you. Having only been there a single time, I still can’t stop thinking about it. But how did this upcoming workshop come to be? Who did I meet that sparked this little adventure? What is the class about, and what is my philosophy regarding how I would approach the class? This is a workshop about experience, appreciation, notebooks, and books. This is a class about finding your uniquely personal narrative and translating that to the printed page. For those of you wondering, I’ve got new tasks in front of me, one of which is to produce more motion content for Blurb, so much of what you see in this film is simply me testing new things. I have a love/hate relationship with filmmaking. I know my limitations and that I can’t do multiple things simultaneously, but I also know this is a common tale of modern life, and I, too, need to adapt. If this class sounds interesting, please reach out.

The footage of the journals and books comes at the end. As does my reading of a journal entry. FYI (For short attention span folks. You know who you are.)

  1. Dan, great video today. I have a question about your journals, I know, I could sign-up for your workshop, but that isn’t in the cards right now. But here goes. How are you making these prints while on the road, outside of the workshop environment? It seems that you are journaling while on the road and you have your great images pasted into the journal book. I use a small thermal printer that I can carry with me (quite small), but nothing that would print like you are doing. Any ideas would be much appreciated. TIA

      Hey David,

      No worries about the workshops. There will be more. As for how I work, there are four printers in play at all times, and another at home. If you watch the YT short I release today, and the full YT film I release in the next few days, you will see how this looks in the field.

    2. Hello Paul, this is good news, half the planning is already done – hope the your wife s calendar cooperates for the other half – lol – please let us know! Eve.

  3. This sounds really cool.

    Non-Patagonia question;

    From your house to that hike trailhead, how many miles?

    Closest hike to me that is somewhat enjoyable is about 9 miles. Closest hike with a bit of altitude and views is 18 but is a nightmare for traffic and parking unless one plays hooky on a weekday.
    After that, everything is at least an hour away.

    Patagonia question;

    Nya-Evo plus another bag? Both Carry-on or 1 carry and 1 check? I could see a person “overpacking” for this quite easily.

      About 3 miles. There are closer hikes, including those off my back porch, but this is two mountains that provide good vertical. With Patagonia I need to check a bag, which is very rare for me. I check a Patagonia duffle, no pun intended, but carry the NYA onboard. Inside the Patagonia duffle are two other small bags, one waterproof. And I have dry bags.

  4. Hi Dan,

    First of all, thank you for everything you share with us. I have a quick question about Patagonia. I understand that this trip and workshop would start from the U.S., but I’m from Chile and currently live here. Would it still be possible for me to join from Chile?

    Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks again!

    2. Gerardo, lo vamos a pasar la fox! jajaja! looking for to meet you in person, saludos cordiales!

  5. Hell yeah! This post was gold in so many ways.
    Evelyn is such a dynamic character. Her journal watercolors are layered much like the different Patagonia hats she “wears”. Jaw dropped and mind racing.
    This trip sounds amazing but timing may be against me as may be headed overseas for a trip in September. Was wondering if I could connect with you to run some ideas, thoughts, and q’s by you…
    Btw the video in the house today was top notch….seemed different not sure why but great nonetheless.
    Glad to see the shirt is still holding up.
    Back to the story…chat soon.

      Sure, whatever works for you! Evelyn is great, and she works her butt off. Scheduling these classes is SO much work, and so much more complicated than people imagine. Elena is in the same boat. Nothing is secure anymore, and prices have skyrocketed.

    2. Alim, thanks 🤗 is fun to read! this summer I just started use a first mate hats, with a few new projects. Patagonia is not going anywhere! and us neither! If something change at your calendar you are more than welcome to enjoy us in Jan,2027 – Evelyn

  6. Hey Sir, been following your stuff for some time. Trip to Patagonia sounds nice, would be learn to go deeper into storytelling and immerse myself into journaling, creating books.. Is there more info on the trip? thanks brother hope to hear you soon

      Hello Michiel, yes, I will email you the information. Should be a fun time. It’s the kind of place you can just sit and watch and it feels like the world is doing you a favor, and reminding you of how far away from center we have drifted.

    2. Hi Michiel, thanks you for being here! Patagonia trip and workshop will be a perfect place to slow down and spend time focusing on storytelling, journaling, photography and nature. Our group is intentionally small, and I can send you the information if you send me an email: evelyn@cruxexpeditions.com I’d love to have you join us, we hope to see you down there! Evelyn

  7. Hello, great video! I´m interested in the Patagonia workshop (I´ve been there two times and is just incredible).
    Could you send me info? I would be going directly from Uruguay.
    Location (is in the chilean side of Patagonia if I understood correctly), dates, and costs.
    Thanks,
    V

  8. Hi Daniel, great video about the workshop. Very helpful. BTW: Check out Josef Koudelka “Diaries”! (aperture) Amazing book with a selection of his 69 journals he made over the course of 50 years.
