Creative: Workshop Update

Elena and I catch up on all things workshop. With Japan right around the corner and Berlin/Hamburg edging in from the beginning of next year, there is much to chat about. We cover some of the strategies for next week’s Japan class and cover the reality of holding our Berlin/Hamburg workshop during the first week of the European Month of Photography. I share some of the new tech and kit I’m bringing to Japan and we talk about an idea for an additional Japan workshop, but one with a very different angle. If you are interested in the workshops you can have a look here, and if you want to know more about EMOP then follow this link. Have a look, have a listen.

  1. Hi Dan! I wish you, Elena and your students a great time in the upcoming workshop! Looking forward to your quick notes from the field or thoughts after the thing. Japan is an extremely intriguing country which all too frequently is approached with “touristic superficiality”, which surely applies to the general mindset of tourism in any country, but to me with Japan it has been especially apparent given the much broader cultural distance from the more “aligned” western culture.

What you mentioned in the video about the breakthroughs of your students, their “ah-ah” moments and the publications/books they ended up creating made me think it would be extremely interesting to feature more of this both as an indirect promotional bit of your workshops and – more importantly – to share examples of the creative growth of photographers and artists who are not yet established and who may represent for many a “next step” in their creative journey. It might come in the form of a “feature” of a book and/or an interview perhaps. It’s a lot of work, I know, just putting it out there as an idea.

A lot of this is shared on the Wide Angle site as well as my YT channel. Most of the time, there is little time to produce much of anything outside of the class itself!

    2. Thanks for the pointer, I was missing the “testimonials” section on the website, will definitely look into it!
