Creative: Hello, Berlin

Just as I imagined. Van to shuttle to flight one to tram to flight two to tram to flight three to train and finally to foot. A perfect day in duration. From high and dry to low and wet. Grayness. Cloaked. To be here after so many books. So much reading about this place, this history, and this crossroads. The workshop starts tomorrow. Rain to train to rain to train. The spacing here is so nice. Tight neighborhoods mixed with middle-distance, sparsely populated offerings that remind me of home.

Just being able to walk and shoot for any length of time feels like stealing now. Rarified.

I have a strategy for this place. ND filter, built-in flash, 4:3, a mix of color and black and white to answer one of the most popular of questions. Can I mix? Yes, you can, but should you? That is another matter entirely. Tell me a story in the way that only you can. That’s the point of all this. I can see images of this place anytime I like, but I can’t see YOUR images and I don’t know YOUR story. That’s where the copy and the book come into play. If left on a table for unsuspecting folks, would the work resonate? That’s what we are here to work on. That’s what we have left when all is said and done. My brain takes a moment to find freedom. A few days of forgetting about routine and the screen. Nope, not now. Just go look and see what you see. Wander and think.

  1. I was there for a week this summer, Dan. I spent most of my time walking from the east side to the west side. The memorial to the 6 million Jews who were murdered was an incredible experience. The screams of children there, running and hiding among the structures, it was something I will never forget.

  2. I too remember a trip to Berlin. My Dad was an 11 year old boy living in the UK during the Blitz. He used to tell us stories about listening for the sound of airplanes overhead.. and being able to recognize a Messerschmidt engine from a Yank’s… and running for cover if the former! As such, my siblings and I associated “Berlin” with the scary evil of WWII. So when I went to Berlin on a business trip for Blurb many many years later it was with decidedly mixed feelings… I’m glad I went as we met many wonderful people there… but I was also glad to leave.

  3. Looks amazing, Dan. I can’t wait for your updates. I’ve been using the dji osmo pocket 3 for my vlogging and it’s a great tool that even I, as technically challenged as I am, can use and enjoy. I hope Berlin is a place I’ll visit, sooner than later. I’m hoping before the end of the year. Cheers!
