Creative: For What It’s Worth, Episode 72

It’s been a while. But I’m back with a stellar yet random list of things to discuss. As always, we begin with who this is for followed by the hero and goat of the week. We hit war in the Middle East, travel to India, my Royal Enfield Himalayan, photography conformity, wokeism, and the complete failure of the Democratic party. Wait, there’s more? Birding, workshops, my X100V impression, and more.

  1. Hello
Thank you for continuing this series its actually my favorite of yours because you can go much more into detail than what you do on YouTube.
I have been waiting for this so hard. love your take on the middle east crisis was really wondering what you would say about this when I read it in the description. but you did not disappoint there and I must say: Very well put!
unfortunately on Apple Podcasts at least the sound was very low and there was a bit of a background humming but not enough to distract from the fantastic content. A good dose of common sense as usual.
    all the best

  2. I believe I was one of the people who asked about the weather sealing on the X100V, and I can assure you I am not “basically walking around the mall once a month making snapshots”, thank you very much. I’ve had a DSLR completely waterlogged on a hiking trip, and it still worked fine for years after. I was lucky. The fact that Fujifilm sell an expensive “weather sealing kit,” I was wondering whether, (a) the X100V is below average in heavy rain, or (b) with the “weather sealing kit” it’s so weather-proof that I could spend hours in a monsoon and be confident that the camera would still work for the rest of my three-month trip.
Another serous question: Thoughts on in-camera multiple exposures saved as a JPEG in the recent Fujis and Nikons? I used to have a DSLR that saved them as RAW files, which I preferred. Maybe you don’t care either way?

First, the mall is a dangerous place. The fountain is always there, waiting for us. So, Mike, here is my thing. I would never continue to use my cameras in a downpour unless I had absolutely no other choice and the images were life and death. When I’m working in inclement weather, as I did all last week in Paris, I had both rain gear and an umbrella so that I could shelter the camera while still using it. These cameras are basically a box of electronics which do not play well with moisture. There is no camera on Earth designed to work in those situations, regardless of what the manufacturer claims. Can you get away with it once in a while, sure, but that’s not something I would do. I plan for weather as I plan for the rest of the trip. I’m about to head to Antartica, and I have a full battle plan for keeping things dry. I’ve had all my Fuji stuff sprinkled on but I’ve not kept my gear out in torrential rain. I just don’t see that being a good plan especially when I’ve had a good working schematic for keeping the kit dry in heavy rain. Clothes, kit, poncho, umbrella. That’s about all I can do.

As for the multi as JPG vs RAW. RAW would be great, but I’m used to the JPG aspect now. I always have the individual RAW files which comprise the multi if I need or want to go back to them. Multi’s were a short term thing for me as well, tied to a specific body of work. Didn’t shoot one last week in Paris. In fact, I forgot all about them.

    2. Hi Dan, thanks for this. Well, the fountain is a potential hazard. Very true. So I guess you are saying you had rain gear for you and an umbrella that you shared with your camera. But it’s apparent that you’re not convinced by the expensive Fuji weather sealing kit for a bit of extra peace of mind.
I also wouldn’t continue to use a camera in a downpour. Unfortunately the waterlogged DSLR was in a backpack that wasn’t as waterproof as it was meant to be. And I am not exaggerating when I say waterlogged.
Yes, the temptation to sit in front of a screen and edit and layer those RAW files. Personally I liked the old option. One RAW file and nothing else.
What’s happening in Antarctica? Have a good trip.
