I’m assuming that seeing this film pop up in my feed will send certain audience members into an uncontrollable rage. You know who you are. Mostly very serious photography types who berate me for sharing anything outside of box speed ramblings and intimate conversations about filter types and the benefits of a threaded lens hood. I’ve been disappointing people my entire life, so why stop now? These behind-the-scenes films are fun to make, easy to make, and also pretty accurate in terms of sharing a bit of what goes on in my life. They also serve as a way for me to practice certain filmmaking techniques I’m attempting to understand and refine. (This is a stretch.) As a reminder, all this YouTube stuff is going away, so for those of you who detest these films, well, you won’t have to endure them much longer. Now, get out there and take chances.

Throwing the first stone here. When you said “old school” it cracked me up. First because you’re really not that old (I am). Secondly, there is no such thing as “new school” is there? “Old school” means you have historical perspective that people without that experience lack. You can understand if you read about it in a book, but in photography or any other creative art, you learn even more by doing what you read about. Unfortunately those that are most willing to turn their nose up at “old school” aren’t willing to even pick up the book. They think they’ve invented everything anyway so why read about it in a book and ruin the fantasy?
I’m rambling but I’ve said for a long time (even longer than you) that a camera is just a tool. You can use the latest whiz bang camera in the world and make mundane images, you can use a pinhole camera made out of a box with tin foil taped to it and produce a work of art that hangs at the Tate. Like you implied in the video, the best camera in the world is the one you have with you.

Buy what you will carry…..right on.
The more YT acts like Social Media (algorithm and pushing shorts mainly), the less I enjoy being on there.
When are you leaving for Peru? Do we see a motorcycle in update before or prior? Still not been to …’thé movie’?
‘Prior or after’ I meant ofcourse. Or ‘before or after’. You choose.

You will get a moto update before I leave. ….. I’ve not seen any movies either.
I bike commute when I can. Ours is not a bike culture not matter what people may say, or what municipalities do to create bike lanes. I think it boils down to three types of motorists. First the negligently oblivious. This is the person with zero situational awareness of what is happening around them or appreciation of the consequences of their actions. Usually found with a cellphone in their hand. Second is the entitled driver. This person has awareness but doesn’t care about anyone else because their needs are more important. Sounds like the lady you encountered in the parking lot falls into this category. Cyclists are a PITA because they keep the entitled from being self actualized as entitled people of importance.
The third type is the malicious, “I hate other humans,” person who sees cyclists as easy prey. This is the person in the lifted quad wheel pickup that either tries to ease you off the road or hammers the accelerator so the truck belches out a thick plume of black smoke. If the smoke doesn’t disorient you and make you crash, you’ll die of lung cancer several years later. In NY we also have felony malicious: folks who string fishing wire across MTB trails because they feel the cyclists are somehow intruding on their space where they want to walk their dogs, smoke weed, play air soft etc.
You have it relatively good up there in Maine.

That guy in the lifted truck is out there but the most dangerous person I encounter are young women. Ruthless. Often on their phone and will do anything to not be delayed by a cyclist, even for a second. have had several near-death type encounters and they were all young women.
This is probably the best one of these so far, at least to my taste. I like to watch them on the shifter site, as I don’t use the other thing unless I’m looking for a how to type video. I wish I could use my bike more, but living in a very rural area makes that difficult. It seems I keep getting smaller and smaller with my camera equipment, because I do want to take it everywhere. I try to leave my phone behind as much as possible, but my wife wants to be able to find me if she needs to, the compromise is just leaving it in my car when I go out. Enjoyed the last shots.

YT is a minefield. I will leave soon, try something new and expand the programming. I have the vision for what I want. Now I just need to learn how to do it.
I like the videos, but I’m eternally grateful that I don’t have to go to YT to watch them. Hate that place.

It’s a great way to lose your focus.
I’m all in on short shorts coming back…a la Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, McEnroe etc. However, crew socks or ankle socks only–no tube socks.

Shorts have gotten shorter. Dolphin shorts, not so much.
With the right legs and hips, most girls would look good in short shorts. Dancers often seem to be blessed with excellent legs. Straight, of course, but with a more pleasing musculature than photographic models, who might tend to look a bit too much on the skinny side, instead. I think a good set of legs is even more rare than a beautiful face. I suppose that dancers score highly because selection for the trade depends so much on legs, anyway.
I’m intrigued by the Trump police mugshot. He has commercialised it, but to whom does the copyright in that picture actually belong? Is the photographer a state employee, or a freelance? Does the face own its own copyright too? Is there the chance that Trump will face yet another charge, but this time of copyright theft? As they say, only in America.
Went for a short ride this morning and it reminded me of my general conclusion about tolerance by drivers of cyclists. The less tolerant they are, the closer they come to you when they pass, the more tolerant seem to give a safer wide birth. Several of both this morning.

Yep, pretty common. Most people are fine, but it only takes one to do real damage.
Off topic, but I wonder what the copyright situation is regarding Trump’s use of the prison mugshot for commercial purposes. Who would own it in such an instance?
Assuming the photog isn’t “work for hire”, the Georgia penal system would effectively own it, though those shots are made for distribution and are released as such. They are meant for free distribution. But I get your meaning — I doubt this covers Trump profiting from it. But that’s a lawsuit that would have to get in line behind the zillion other lawsuits…. we only know of the top 20 or so. There are many, many, more….and at his age, there’s no way they’ll come to light before his death.

He’s such a punk. A truly gutless human being. I don’t care about his mug shot. He’s been fleecing his fans for decades, why stop now.
Author
Probably State of Georgia. But he’s so used to breaking the law and drowning people in lawsuits.
I must have missed an article/episode/memo. Your YouTube stuff is going away? You’ll no longer be making videos?
Author
Going to still make them. Will expand actually, into something I hope is very valuable but it will go to a subscription model.
For anyone interested in watching YouTube without all the ads/distractions and using a Mac, download the DuckDuckGo browser from the Apple Store then…
1. Open Settings —> Duck Player
2. Select “Always open Youtube videos in Duck Player”
Most YT videos will open in the Duck Player sans ads and such. So far it’s worked for all the sites I regularly visit.
The DuckDuckGo browser is free and can be downloaded from the Apple Store or the DuckDuckGo website. There are also Android and Windows versions but I don’t know if they have the Duck Player option. Worth a check though.
If you can’t get the DuckDuckGo browser from whatever the Android and Windows app stores there are you can download the app from the DuckDuckGo web site. Just don’t use a 3rd party; make sure the web site you use starts with “https://duckduckgo.com”.
As a bonus the browser blocks many (but not all) trackers that are embedded on web sites and gives you a count per site if you turn on “Recent Activity”. You’d be surprised at the number of trackers there are on web sites.
And no, I get nothing for posting this, outside of the possibility I helped someone have a better day watching YT videos… 🙂

Good advice, thanks Jon.
Maybe catching you before you move on from comments…
Alternative to YT might be Vimeo (?). I know next to nothing about video and even less about video online. But I’ve run into some videos using it and they look pretty good. I know this site uses WordPress and Vimeo for video ( https://davidduchemin.com/ ); here’s a sample of one of the videos: https://www.theheartofthephotograph.com/ No idea of how much it costs to use… 🙁

Vimeo is okay but what I found is better. At least I think so. I need content first so I have some work to do and what I’m after is something I’ve not done before, so it will take some time.
