Creative: Newsletter Warning

Hey Team,

Just a head’s up. Uncle Danno is about to launch his newsletter. Hundreds of people have signed up for The Shifter Wire, believe it or not, but I’ve never actually sent one. At least I don’t think I have. I’ve been preaching the power of the newsletter for the past several years and I feel it’s time to finally put my money where my mouth is. I’m so in need of a change with this site, with my personal work, my photography and my place in this world. I think maybe these changes begin with a newsletter.

The reason I’m writing this email is to warn those of you who signed up to receive my newsletter. I KNOW I’m going to get hate mail from people who signed up, forgot they signed up, and who might feel violated by receiving my upcoming note. For those of you who might feel this way…sorry. Unsubscribe. I won’t be offended.

Now, here is where things get complicated. What the HELL do I put in the newsletter? I don’t want the newsletter to be a replication of this site. I don’t really have anything to sell, at least not at the moment. I do have some ideas, even a few good ones, but I’d love to hear from you if you have the time and desire. It has been long while since I’ve written about photography. I mean really written about photography. About particular moments, ideas, styles, strategies, etc. This might make it in. I also think shining a light on other creatives might be a good idea. I’d like to keep it simple.

One of the ideas I’ve always fought against is the idea that my life might be interesting to someone else. I look at myself, my real self, as a quiet, introvert who likes being alone. Someone who likes to read, write, think, make pictures and tell stories, but the idea that I would be the story is still a foreign concept. But, maybe this isn’t the case. Still dealing with how to deal with this.

Also, I signup for newsletters. I receive at least six that I find entirely intriguing. Some are attempting to sell me a thing or two, but I’m okay with that. Others aren’t selling anything but instead share all kinds of interesting facts. Each of these newsletters are so good they force me to stop what I’m doing and pay attention. I hope to achieve the same result with you.

  1. Hi Dan, I seem to remember you saying a while back that you had started sketching ( a return to it maybe?) so you could talk about that a bit; do you keep a sketchbook or something similar, do you share your art or is it just for you?
    Just a thought…cheers – David.

      David,
My sketches are mostly HORRIBLE. So I don’t typically share a lot of those. But, my goal is to share whatever is creative. Thanks for responding.

  2. Dan:

How about an article with the idea “Who Are You Shooting For?”. In the beginning all I did was family, vacation, events in the area, travel for myself and family. With the advent of social media, I started taking photos with the object of putting them on social media and not specifically for me. It did get me out of the house but the pictures were mediocre and I realized if I had to pay for the photos (using film) I would not have taken them. Social media posting became boring and I started searching for subjects that interested me, period. If I didn’t have a good subject or story, I just shot less. So that is my thought and I think others might find themselves in the same boat.

p.s. Your personal stories are valuable mainly because others go through the similar experiences.

      Alan,
Great idea. Personal stories will very much be a part of the newsletter. And personal stories related to individual images. Stay tuned, thanks for responding.

  3. I think this is a truly wonderful idea. I can’t wait to participate in the exchange. I aspire to be as prolific as you when it comes to meaningful, thought provoking content. I know I don’t say it as often as I should but your efforts to be creative in this world are always welcome, at least in my world. So sally forty and bring it!

      Eric,
And just think back to our TJ days. Man, we’ve seen some serious conejo action. All of whom will be in the newsletter.

  4. I always wondered what happened to the newsletter that never arrived, LOL. Some good news then.
I think this sounds very good … “It has been long while since I’ve written about photography. I mean really written about photography. About particular moments, ideas, styles, strategies, etc. This might make it in. I also think shining a light on other creatives might be a good idea. I’d like to keep it simple.” … Also because my personal situation, I’d love to hear where and how you get the inspiration from for projects or just to shoot anything in general. Struggling at the moment and really not feeling like taking any photo for quite few months already. But I bet there is more people like me out there.

      EB,
I think what I’m going to do is VERY simple and directly related to photography. Nothing else.
