LOOK3-2012-Paramount-Marquee

For those of you with an interest in photojournalism you should know about something called Look3 Festival of the Photograph. I’ll be heading to the event early tomorrow and will hopefully see some of you there. This is a perfectly sized event meaning not massive, but that’s a good thing because the density of the experience is focused, heightened and truly consumes anyone who makes the decision to attend. The locations and venues are superb, and the city of Charlottesville is a cool place that transforms into an open air exhibition space.

There are a lot of events to attend these days, but Look3 is unique. Their lineup of speakers, projections and education is stellar. If you have ANY interest in photography, photojournalism, publishing or storytelling then time at this event is something to covet. This will be my second time at the festival. My memories of the last trip include speaking at the Magnum workshops, watching insanely good projections, having coffee with my heroes and also watching Sally Mann(who I always had a crush on) interview Nan Goldin.

In the words of the organization….

This year’s line-up of artists and events promises to be extraordinary, representing a broad range of work and perspectives. LOOK3 will welcome Nick Brandt, Graciela Iturbide, Frans Lanting, Yuri Kozyrev, Olivia Bee, Sheila Pree Bright, Mary F. Calvert, Binh Danh, Doug DuBois, Joe Riis and Radcliffe “Ruddy” Roye to the Paramount Theater stage on June 15, 16, 17 & 18. Exhibitions by each of the featured artists can be seen in pop-up galleries, on buildings, and even in the trees along Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall!

More info and tickets at www.look3.org. See you there! I actually get a bit nervous thinking about attending this event. I’m going for Blurb and have no stake in the photography world any longer, but these are real deal people in the industry who have shaped our vision of photography for decades. The upside is that the atmosphere at the event is so calm and collected it makes it entirely enjoyable. See you there.
