Adventure: New Mexico Training

I’m only posting this because it is so beautiful out here I can’t stand myself. This ride was nothing, but the scenery, weather and atmosphere are so interesting I find myself daydreaming of living in my truck and just spending the rest of my life exploring New Mexico.(Saturday I have a real ride planned….stay tuned for my pain and suffering.) Something happens to me when I’m here. My schedule goes from spending my days in my Costa Mesa house to being booked up day and night in the Santa Fe scene and culture. That culture may or may not be what you think. I don’t mean anything trendy. In fact, I fuc%$%$# hate trendy things. I really do. My “scene” if you will means getting up somewhere between 3:30AM and 5AM and getting outdoor, preferably for at least two hours. Then home for coffee/read. Then 30-mins of yoga. Then I begin my day by 9:30 New Mexico time, which is 8:30 California time. Then I’m booked all day with meetings, interviews, gatherings, lectures, etc. This place has so much going on it’s difficult to determine what to do. This goes on all day and night. I have to really work to be home by 10PM so I can sleep and do it all over again. It’s so damn strange, and really shouldn’t work for me, but I feel so alive here I can’t really explain it. I walked into a Creative Santa Fe lecture last night, with a woman who just got a publishing deal and an exhibit at the New Mexico History museum, and the first person I see says “Oh, your Dan, I’m supposed to meet you. You helped us with the Blurb project we had.” This place reminds me we have SO little time. So little. Get out and do.

  1. Damn it’s beautiful. I can’t stand you either 😉

And I know getting up early is a virtue / the Santa Fe way / how to get the worm, but 3.30 – 5 AM?!!!!!

      C,
It makes no sense. I shouldn’t be able to function like this, but something happens to me. I’ve been running on 4-5 hours of sleep per night. Half of what I normally get. And exercising like crazy.

      FBJ,
You know. I just had lunch with Reid from the workshops and am going to the SFPW sponsored writer talk at Collected Works later. There is SO much going on, not to mention it’s so damn nice here now. 80’s. Sunny. We’ve been swimming in Abiquiu Lake, cycling, hiking, lectures, dinners, etc. Get your ass over here.

  2. I’ve been there only once, but the light and beauty are burned into my soul. ‘Been itchin’ to get back there ever since, and time has sipped away at a rapidly advancing rate. Love the city, the mountains, the food….but especially the light…it’s pure magic.

      Mark,
The light here is different, for sure, and can be good even at times when in most other places you wouldn’t think of shooting. However, the first four hours of the day and the last two hours of the day are pretty fantastic.

  3. It was the spring of ’84 when I came to Santa Fe for the first time – to attend a conference. Well, I skipped a lot of talks, sneaked outdoors to breath, smell, look and run. Man, that place, that atmosphere, that light has so much energy. Whatever I did, I wanted to do more. And the more I did the more energy I had – shooting with my good old F3, running with well worn Nikes.
    Pure magic!
